Cristian Vogel on the first and last albums he bought and the one he always turns to in an emergency

FIRST

Rush
‘Moving Pictures’
(Mercury, 1981)

“For years I was so embarrassed that this was the first album I bought that I’d hide it at the back of my collection. In the 90s, touring with Jamie Lidell as Super_Collider, we got tickets to see the Beastie Boys in Perth. Mixmaster Mike open with two copies of ‘Tom Sawyer’, flipping the intro back to back. After that, this album went to the front of the collection!”

LAST

Jean C Roché
‘Birds Of Venezuela’
(Sub Rosa, 2018)

“The most recent record I bought is this tropical field recordings album by Jean C Roche. As a release, it’s so dedicated to the psychic power of nature, but also to the practice of extreme field recording. Perfectly recorded and arranged, these are some of the most breathtaking sounds I’ve heard. The soundscapes remind me a lot of my deepest sessions on the modular synth.”

ALWAYS

Marvin Gaye
‘What’s Going On’
(Tamla Motown, 1971)

“In an emotional emergency, I might turn to Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ or ‘Jetsun Mila’ by Eliane Radigue or even ‘Swoon’ by Prefab Sprout. It really depends on the nature of the emergency. Music can be very healing, we all know that. If you’re wiped out and down in the dirt, it could be that you need to just listen to some records. You don’t need to dance or do anything else other than just listen.”
