Mark Burford’s sixth sonic exploration (his first for Castles In Space) explores Hy-Brasil, an elusive, mythical phantom island off Ireland. Laid down over six weeks as live takes using new Eurorack modules to layer up his Moogs before studio tweaks, there is a sense of freedom, the sounds matching the intriguing mythology it is inspired by. The kinetic synths and electronic chirps of ‘Magic Lanterns’ evoke birds overhead, a sense of coming into land from a vast ocean. Exemplary aural cartography.
