Compelling Tel Aviv MC and partner in crime fuel future-facing mash-ups
Who She?
Noga Erez is a rapper/vocalist from Tel Aviv, Israel, who makes bleepy, glitchy and confrontational leftfield hip hop with her co-writer, composer and producer Ori Rousso. She recently signed to City Slang, who have recently unveiled her debut single ‘Dance While You Shoot’.
Why Noga Erez?
Because she brings a politically charged agenda to her lyrical wordplay and a warped, experimental edge to her music. Noga says ‘Dance While You Shoot’ is about how “you can’t live without the government that ensures your basic needs, but at the same time takes your money, keeps you in the dark about the real, important matters that affect your life directly”. So, while lazier journalists might lump her in with FKA Twigs, her work is actually much closer to the rebellious spirits of MIA, Mykki Blanco or Flying Lotus.
Tell Us More?
A good place to start exploring is the atmospheric and dystopian promo for her debut track, shot in a disused building in Kiev, Ukraine, by hotly tipped directors Zhang + Knight. It won’t be long before her first long-player hits the shelves either. It’s on the City Slang schedule for a spring release, and the track we’ve been privileged enough to hear in advance (‘Pity’) is jammed with brilliantly corrupted electronics, ghostly sub-bass rumbles and razor-sharp lyrical flow. She played London, Berlin, Paris and New York at the end of 2016 and will no doubt be back for more soon.
