Who he?
German-born, Italian-raised, London-based producer Vonica creates eclectic synthpop that builds with hypnotic rhythms and fragmented electronic textures. His debut EP ‘Sol De Nit’ features four sumptuous, layered tracks of his signature sound.
Why Vonica?
He’s always loved music from a young age, and prior to going it alone as Vonica, he was in an indie band with his best mate. That came to a swift end however when his pal left the country to become a priest “in a far away Italian Monastery”. Your guess is as good as ours. While forming the tracks for his EP, he was a little apprehensive about the entire process as he realised it was his first steps outside of indie into the world of electronic music. From what we’ve listened to, he needn’t have worried.

Lead track ‘Ai’, taken from ‘Sol De Nit’, was written after Vonica visited an Ai Wei Wei exhibition (which is, obvs, where the track also takes its name). “Musically it was one of the first songs to come about,” he explains, “so it has this strong sense of urgency and joy of expressing myself under a different guise”. The psychedelic video that accompanies the track was created by none other than the ever-brilliant Dan Tombs (who has worked with the likes of Jon Hopkins, Factory Floor and Gold Panda). For a first foray into electronic music, this is great stuff. He better hurry with a debut album.
