New NASA-inspired project
Experimental artist and electronic music producer Kayla Painter has a new album, ‘Fractures‘, in the blocks, and lead single ‘Clipper‘ is named after NASA’s imminent mission to explore Jupiter’s frozen moon. The Europa Clipper mission launches on 10 October and will take nearly six years to travel a mind-bending 1.8 billion miles to reach Europa.
‘Clipper‘, says Painter, follows the album’s mission into space where time and gravity fall away, nothing is as it seems, and everything is unexpected.
“The idea of launching my debut album alongside Europa Clipper feels monumental to me,“ says Painter. “As my music often follows themes of space, the unknown and consciousness, it feels like the perfect way to present my debut album to the world. My music has often not fitted easily into boxes, and whilst in the past I have seen that as a negative, lately as I have embraced this album, and the people who inspire me, like Delia Derbyshire, Autechre, and Brian Eno, I have also really harnessed my individual sound and this is a huge celebration of that.
“I wanted this track to be strong and have a sense of discovery in its narrative, but I also wanted to retain a sense of the unknown. I used a unique collection of sounds to represent the NASA mission, as on Earth we may have many ideas about what we might find on Europa, but really it is all an estimation until the Clipper gets there and starts gathering data.
“I really wanted to explore a sonic territory I have never occupied before, so I worked with TJ Allen on this track; it delves into his unique synth work and joins our sound palettes. Working as a collaboration, this track has been through several phases which I like, it was a dialogue of sharing ideas, and I learnt so much working this way. In order to achieve something really unique I thought it was important to push boundaries of my own writing, and this really worked with the idea of this album being all about discovery and pushing boundaries and exploring beyond the limited knowledge we have.”
