LoneLady a.k.a Julie Campbell announces new album ‘Hinterland Home Recordings’ via Warp on January 29th

This is the home-recorded version of LoneLady’s highly-acclaimed album ‘Hinterland’ (Warp 2015). Campbell wrote, recorded and mixed these songs in her home bedroom studio in a towerblock in Manchester across 2011-2013 and show the completeness of Campbell’s vision; fully arranged and realised with a modest armoury of instruments and effects units. Julie then took the recordings to Michigan to work with engineer-producer Bill Skibbe (Jack White, The Kills, Franz Ferdinand) who sensitively galvanised her mix to add depth and power.

‘Hinterland Home Recordings’ charts the evolution of Campbell’s self-taught recording and mixing processes from using a Tascam 4-track then 8-track, graduating to a laptop and GarageBand, and eventually Pro Tools. It also invites the listener more closely into that small towerblock room nestled by the motorway, to reveal the process a little more intimately…

“My bed was right next to the table cluttered with instruments, writings, the 8-track, books, various instruments and a Fender Twin amp wedged in .. Telecaster, acoustic guitar, bass, childhood cheap Yamaha keyboard, a cello, Roland percussion pad and various effects units and miscellany…GarageBand really enabled me to explore mixing and production, enabling me to deepen my musical visions.. Each song built up and meticulously worked into like a painting, each detail like a brushstroke. At the time I didn’t really need much else; I had the guitar and these detailed worlds I was building.  I had my little walks along the canal. The laptop with GarageBand was a new thing for me. I was experimenting, listening, mixing, learning. With no outside input, just communing with my self and my instruments, and the landscapes of Manchester. I really poured my whole soul and vision into these recordings”.

‘Hinterland Home Recordings’ is a celebration of the intimacy and integrity of the home recording process and of the imagination; a reminder of the unique qualities of LoneLady ahead of a new album slated for 2027, available on limited edition vinyl run of 1000 as well as digitally and on CD with colour 8-page booklet.
