Another month, another release from Ivan The Tolerable’s Oli Heffernan, this time with Ajay Saggar (Bhajan Bhoy) and Kohhei Matsuda (Bo Ningen) in tow. Largely minimalist, ‘University Challenged’ is a rolling repetition of fractured sounds, recalling everything from deep spiritual jazz and early electronics to psychedelia and pastoral guitar soli, all just about recognisable. ‘Choppers Over Negril’ features Rastafarian vocal samples, radio pulses, jittering kosmische electronics and subtle psych licks over 10 majestic minutes. Wonderfully tense, cerebral stuff.
