Youssou N’Dour uses these Senegalese rhythms to bring light. In contrast, this new project from Portico Quartet’s Jack Wyllie shades those same patterns with the cacophonous nightlife of Dakar. He uses mbalax percussion from Khadim Mbaye and Tons Sambe as a starting point, adding weighty hypnotic chords and jazzy saxophone ambience.
